Fusing Josh Allen and Triciajane Asuncion’s expertise in fashion, art, and architecture, CONCORD explores the artists' combined passion for design through a series of newly commissioned artworks. The exhibition offers an immersive experience that challenges old and inspires new ways of understanding ourselves, society, and culture. Both Allen and Asuncion are deeply influenced by the art and architectural movements of the 20th century. Using her foundation in architecture, Asuncion’s practice investigates the various ways design can enhance the human experience. She draws inspiration from the historic Bauhaus movement, that aimed to unite all artistic mediums into a singular approach.
Similarly, Allen’s interdisciplinary practice employs the universal language of abstraction to promote collective empowerment and unity. At the core of Allen’s aesthetic is a black and white free-hand drawing entitled “CHAOS,” which first emerged when he was in the 8th grade. The pattern has become the central graphic of his namesake art-centric lifestyle brand, Richard and Grace. “CAN WE UNITE UNDER CHAOS OR WILL WE BE DESTROYED BY IT?" - JOSH ALLEN
With Allen’s monograph as a point of departure, Asuncion created a suite of architectural drawings and small parti models that reimagine the spatial possibilities of the pattern in three dimensions. The main gallery is anchored by a series of Allen’s abstract expressionist paintings, his site-specific mural-sized screen print, a fabric work by Asuncion, and her titular sculpture made of an interwoven network of strings within a wooden frame. Each artwork collides in perfect aesthetic and conceptual harmony. “CONCORD IS A REMINDER THAT ONE WILL ALWAYS FIND THEIR PLACE IN THE INTERWOVEN UNIVERSE.” - TRICIAJANE ASUNCION
